detail prompt
Phew! For those of you who live in the Northeast of the US, like me, today is the beginning of a major heat wave. It is HOT, especially considering how mild spring has been so far.
Hot days are common settings for stories, so if you live somewhere where it’s really hot today, why not take the oppurtunity to really study how heat makes you feel? Think about all five of your senses—how does your skin feel? Moist? Burnt? Are you seeing those ripple lines in the road? Is it quieter outside because more people are inside?
Write about the heat from the first or the third person, as if you’re opening onto a scene on a hot day.

Prompt idea by toinfinnity:
Write about someone who is experiencing an overwhelming feeling that is demanding to felt. Show, don’t tell.
I might also suggest picking an emotion and then writing about how a certain character you’re working on experiences it. What is Character X like when she’s frustrated? Nervous? Excited?

Prompt idea by imdifferentgetoverit:
Turn an ordinary and mundane activity into something exciting, by using loaded language. (Ex: “The dog ran around the yard,” would become something like, “The lean, muscular dog dashed around and around the yard so many times, it was amazing she didn’t get dizzy or even tired. She just kept on chasing the tennis ball, as if she had an infinite amount of energy.”
Take note, though: there’s a fine line between being to sparse with words and being too flowery. Balance, grasshoppers.
Write about the thoughts a girl has while she’s out and about by herself, shopping or running errands. Integrate her inner monologue with her actions, and the scenery that she witnesses.
Write about an old favorite pair of shoes.
What is the conflict? Are they lost? Does someone want the owner to throw them away? Did the dog eat one?
Make sure to describe the shoes really well.
