Describe your character’s scent. Use other types of words besides general smell words. For instance, certain words for me invoke quirks, personalities, emotions, etc.

Prompt idea by theticklishpear:

Take any character and think about how landscape helps shape identity. Do they consider more than one place their home? Write about how the places they’ve lived have influenced who they are. Focus on elements like climate, culture, history, etc.

Write a story in which your main character is completely alone for a longer-than-normal amount of time.

How does solitude affect his/her sanity, personality, etc.?

This could be a good exercise to try on a character you’re currently scheming up for another project.

Prompt idea by hibbergashen-spyderp:

Write pretend letters between your characters, even if via an outdated communication form. (It helps me develop their personalities, and how the two specific characters interact. It’s also pretty easy to get going since as you write you’re also thinking of what the other will say.)

Prompt idea by daniohs:

Write a story or about a character who can live as long as they like (for example, from an extra 10 years to infinity) and has the option to end their life, if they so choose. Their death, however, cannot come from outside forces, it must be from the character’s will.

Prompt idea by viscountjan:

We know a fit or a health-conscious person; he may be a co-worker or a friend. But what we may not know about our healthy friend he may be a germaphobe.

Write about our germaphobe friend: how he looks like, how health-conscious he is and every health-related activity he may be involved in. But emphasize on his irrational fear of germs, germs, germs. Does he carry a hand sanitizer everywhere and use it every time he touches things that aren’t his? What are his cleaning habits? Does he despise people who sneeze? Does he have some immunodeficiency because of being “too clean”? Will he ever get over this fear of germs; how and when?

You don’t necessarily have to write about a specific friend—you could make up a germaphobic character.

Write about a kid and his/her dog who have become homeless. What happened?

This picture makes me think of that book They Cage the Animals At Night, which I think is the first depressing book I remember having to read.

Prompt idea by cutelikeacupcake:

Write about meeting a person that is the complete opposite of yourself. How do you react?
