One of the best pieces of advice I've gotten on research, especially when you don't know or know very little about your subject, is to go to the library and look in children's books. The information is written in clear, easy to read language and already tailored towards inquisitive minds! And while an adult or young adult probably won't get all they need, it's a good starting point to come up with questions for further research.
