With regard to the THG love triangle - that's EXACTLY why I loved it! Neither Katniss nor the story were defined by her investment in either man. Katniss' development as a character was not about "which boy?" but how she dealt with her entire world being upended by the struggle to survive and political revolution. But the romance is still there in the shadows; it gives credence to the idea that strong women are desirable. You don't have to be meek to find someone. Have your cake & eat it, too!
^This is actually a really, really good point! The only thing that I would add was that sometimes the triviality of “Who do I like, Gale or Peeta?” seem silly next to the “Oh hey, 23 people are trying to kill me/the entire country is at war/people are getting murdered all around me” situations. But I wasn’t upset with Katniss (who I think is an awesome, modern female character) for being undecided—I was more frustrated with how Collins wrote it. Which goes back to what I said to the original ask-er.
