Regarding villains, I think that the most important thing with a villain is to construct that character like you would any other character-- as if there aren't any 'badguys' or 'goodguys', but people who have opposing morals and ideas and personalities. Even the most horrible villain can be a complex, "real" person, and it's hard to go wrong with a well-developed character.
