To write a likeable villan, I tend to take an aspect of myself that I revile. An instance where I was cruel, or rude or a bully. Explode that moment of yourself out into enough of a person's life to make them qualify as a villan, but leave all the bits of humanity they need to still be a person. It being something that is yours means that you can flesh the edges of things with all the reasons and justifications, to the point that you can even sympathize against the victims, with the villan.
