For that anon - the easiest way I can think of to make a villain with more than one facet, or that everyone can like, is to make them relatable. Do they have a redeeming love for children that makes up for the fact that they want your protagonist dead? Or maybe when they really believe that what they're doing is for the better, and people will thank them lately. It's all about layering them, I think - making a good villain takes as much work as making a protagonist. :)
