re: minor characters. my fiction writing prof told us to imagine that there was a character tax we had to pay each time we introduced a new character. forget discussion of whether they require a backstory or not. if you don't need them, don't introduce them. and if you think they're important enough to be introduced, give some backstory. pay the tax.
