I think the statement you've made on adverbs is appropriate, but must be taken in moderation. Removing all adverbs is one end of a spectrum; overusing them is another. The mark of a skilled writer is the ability to know when an adverb is assisting the story, and to know when to remove them. People who are burning with indignation over your (and King's) opinion of adverbs maybe should reevaluate, but it's a matter of temperance.
