I think whether or not NaNoWriMo is effective depends on what you want to get done with it. If you want to write the perfect novel, then it probably isn't going to help you much. But as far as a writing practice and a source of motivation for the first draft goes, I think it's a wonderful tool. I'm a bit behind, but it's working out well for me thus far.
