yourotherboyfriend asked: Could profanity be included in the stories submitted??
I'm feeling so inspired and motivated tonight...
…which you think would be good, since I’m studying for my 2 exams tomorrow (yes, UNC is so kind and holds exams on Saturdays). But all I want to do is direct my inspiration and motivation to either writing something new (so many ideas in my head lately, probably because I’m reading a lot of great stuff while I study, and I always seem to get story ideas during exams, wtf…...

I would just like to say that I really really love...
It is such a joy to work on. I love the community that has formed here. I am having a warm fuzzy moment toward you all. I wish I could hug all of you. And then give you book. Wrapped in pretty, shiny wrapping paper.

scrawlingtruths asked: Hey there. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask this...
I created a blog especially for my writing because on my personal, I got really involved with following writers and poets, and thought - hey! I could create a writing blog too - just for writing!
So, I did.
I'm really not sure where to start though. Of course, there is always the whole "Just...

I love our yw! discussions. Just a pointer:
Whenever we have these big discussions, like the recent rap/poetry and NaNoWriMo ones, I tag all of the asks with the same tags. That way you can click on the tag and see the whole discussion filtered. I take a lot of time to do that so I just wanted to make sure people notice, haha. I think it helps so you don’t have to sift through all the other posts to see what people have been saying,...

8paradox asked: Lil' Wayne is great but I can't sit there and listen to him and get a feel for him or take him seriously. He's the type of rapper that you listen to while sitting on the porch with your boys drinking and joking. He is not the best rapper out there, and he doesn't touch the level of mastery with words that can be found among the likes of Tupac, Biggei, Nas, Common, DMX, Mos-Def,...

Prompt idea by KatsKradle:
Write about characters in a story who know they’re characters in a story.
Sounds like Stranger Than Fiction! A great movie, and it’s awesome to see Will Ferrell in a serious role. He’s great.

ophiuchaexmachina-deactivated20 asked: Eminem is, lyrically, one of the best musicians - if you accept the term - working today. We can argue about his content (though he does have plenty of songs without much in terms of T&A, drugs, etc.), but the man can write well. If I may, I recommend two songs: "Without Me", a typical rap song in terms of content, but very atypical in terms of structure and rhyme, and worth sitting...

enteringintocreation asked: Eminem has very little merit to me. Yes, he's masterful with words, but I wouldn't call it poetic. Artists like Atmosphere and Celph Titled I think deserve a lot more credit than him. With Atmosphere you don't have to get past the autotune and other artificiality to get to the lyrics, because he's got the whole package.

zombiesarejerks asked: The rap discussion is interesting. "Most rap is stupid." Hasn't anyone here heard of Sturgeon's Law? Just like with every form of media, there's people who have nothing to say (Kid Rock, Stephanie Meyer, Michael Bay), there's people who have a lot to say, but don't really know how to say it (Black Flag, Terry Gilliam), and people who have nothing to say, but say...

jumpseatmonalisa asked: As to the discussion about rap as poetry...ugh. I won't deny that it's pretty amazing how they weave words around so quickly and in such interesting patterns, but most of what rap music is talking about is drivel that has no value beyond "check out my women and my cars and my jewelry." Either that, or they're complaining about getting exactly what they wanted. Granted,...

runnningoutofideas asked: I think a lot of Kanye West's stuff could be considered modern day poetry, the final verse on that "Lost in the World" song is pretty amazing...crude, but amazing. (I realise Kanye doesn't rap that part, but I don't know the name of who is...)
This verse:
"Us living as we do upside down.
And the new word to have is revolution.

vomitinkonpaper asked: Ahem. I don't really know when this whole topic started, and the complete story and all, but I figured I could contribute. To me, Eminem is masterful with words. He just finds a way to make everything he spits sound amazing. In an interview with a guy I totally don't remember, he stated something along the lines that he could find a way to rhyme any word, regardless of how...

thoughtsinreverse asked: Disagree about Lil Wayne. Eminem does speak volumes with his words. Lil wayne doesn't really send any message worth listening to. but, to each his own.

dionthesocialist asked: It's not the controversy or the fact that he's a rapper I disagree with. Hip-hop is certainly poetic. It's just my opinion that Eminem just stuffs as many syllables/rhymes into his raps as possible, but never actually says anything. A fantastic technician, no doubt, but it's all sizzle and no steak to me. If there's a rapper who I'd call the great American poet (and I...

weetz-deactivated20120417 asked: hahahaha i love people who have no idea what poetry is- that song lyrics, and predominantly those of the 'rap' genre, adhere to poetic form, meter, etc... you're dead on with Eminem. and certainly there are others who could be added to that list but he's definitely a prime example of how poetry is consistently evolving despite the disintegration of print media. we're...

By “more like this” I don’t mean the background or text or anything, that’d stay the same, I’m just saying having 3 columns of content as opposed to one, basically.

It's great - sooo worth it if you can spare the time to write approximately 1667 words a day. Definitely a lot of work, but I think it's a great writing exercise. The goal is quantity, not quality, so anything goes - and you get the bonus bragging rights of saying "I wrote a novel in one month"!

freudiancascade-deactivated2013 asked: My own two-cents about NaNo? I've completed it for the last two years in a row - the first year, I went in after deciding on the second-last day of October that this would be fun, and came out with a manuscript I love. The second year I spent months preparing, and came away with a manuscript that fell painfully short of what I had hoped to achieve. Both years I finished, but I guess the best...

rainbowsburningstars asked: advice for nanowrimo! while you can't start writing yet there's still a ton of other stuff you can do! for example, you can begin figuring out the basic plot of what you'd like to do. you can also begin planning characters and making outlines.
